This is cool, but I think Bigmouthdesignco is right, the quillon does need a highlight against the figures chest, you cant see it at all, and it does throw the balance off. Great art though :)

i figured out what it was thats nagging me. maybe its the same for you,Refco? the balance of the sword is thrown off by not having a thin highlight to show the other side of the crossguard against the black. easily remedied.

I would buy the book that wore this cover. Most evocative, well done!

I remember the old covers, after all I will be 54 this year. I am fond of simplicity as it holds so much more being so. This is a work well deserving of recognition.

For those who are wondering, the theme in this artwork is based on the extract with the sword fight- one hand holds the sword, while the 'hand of god'/fate holds on as well, as if to guide the sword or demonstrate that Fate determines outcomes. It is deliberately vague which hand is which, hence their being switched around. The piece is meant to be more symbolic, rather than a simple straightforward visual representation of the character. I like to produce simple aged vector imagery with minimal detail, deliberately emulating the style of the old penguin covers from the 1940s-70s- with their simple graphic cover artwork and minimal colouring.

Can you guys please stop arguing. Franky_J- if you don't like my artwork you don't have to keep going on about it to the point of rudeness. Also lots of other entrants (my colleagues) have asked for families and friends to vote as well, there's nothing wrong with that. Now please both of you and stop trolling.

Not eighty of them! Granted there are those who haven't done alot in this competition and there are others who have put alot of effort in but haven't created something that would really work for a book however I've seen some good, eye-catching work in this competition that has obviously been the product of many hours work that would be viewed as "fashionable" and advertises the content of the book. This seems to make up it's own theme, ignoring the extracts. This is a fair piece of work but there those that are more deserving than this that will be ignored due to the nature of this artistic competition. Emphasis on ARTISTIC COMPETITION not popularity contest.

you honestly believe other competitors didnt get their friends, family and peers to vote for them?
  • franky_J
    Thu 04 - Mar - 2010, 01:36
Yup. Doesn't answer my quetion about the stream of votes suddenly drying up though does it? Considering it's a "peer-on-peer" competiton then would you agree that it's fair that most of the people who vote on this are not running in the competition, have only voted through links from sited like facebook and beebo rather than actually looking at the other pieces of artwork and are of a non-artistic background. And I know, I know it's important to get a public opinion for a product marketed TO the public but the y are looking at a friends work rather than judging what they like from the variety of works. It's Bias and you know it.

Having worked in advertising for ten years and sourced art for books, games and general publications, I can say that this is clearly the most slick, professional looking cover. It also stands within the current trends of book design which, granted, may not be what Penguin is looking for. However, this cover is good. Any artist or marketer with taste would agree. Also, given my company has paid for this artists work in the past and that work has been good, I am can say this artist certainly a professional worthy of pay and recognition. There are only two others in the top ten I could say that for.

Explain why the voting stopped the moment I mentioned it and I'll surrender. Yet another strange coincidence when you consider there was a vote every ten minutes almost ON the ten minutes for at least an hour. Would it enter your head if I told you I work on the sight and it's my job to monitor things like this?

ha ha! would it enter your head that maybe she associates online with other artists and designers who know and like her work?
  • franky_J
    Thu 04 - Mar - 2010, 01:04
Whatever. The people who have put real effort into this deserve to win. This is a good opertunity for artists, who don't just throw their work together in one casual evening, not a popularity contest to be judged by people who don't have a clue...

when you post your art and the link on your blogs/facebook/myspace/bebo etc people tend to join and vote when they read it at the top of their updates , ie; within the next ten mins. we are also currently sending this to friends and designers worldwide at this time hence theyre all voting. Duh!
  • franky_J
    Thu 04 - Mar - 2010, 00:46
Seems strange that all of these votes are not only within ten minutes of each other but also within ten minutes of the members joining. Would they really find this piece of artwork so quickly or be so pasionate about it that they would join just to vote for it? hmm? If you spent this amount of time and dedication on your art rather than trying to cheat you'd probably have a decent book cover by now.

this deserves to win. not like a tacky sci-fi or horror-style cover that could put some readers off. this has the look of a book that could sit comfortably on any shelf in the book shop yet is still eye-catching enough to be picked up.
