What Is Unpaid Work Doing To The Fashion Industry?

Condé Nast College of Fashion & Design

16-17 Greek Street, Soho, London, W1D 4DR

Price: £10
Time: 19:00-21:00

Today’s fashion graduates across multiple disciplines from design to styling, PR, photography and journalism are asked to undertake full time, unpaid internships for up to a year in order to earn their place in the industry.

Even for those with years of experience, offers of unpaid work are common, leaving talented people without the means to support themselves.

The Fashion Debates brings together another crucial discussion asking questions on this little-talked-about topic: Is there really no money in fashion, or are people just used to free labour? What are your legal rights to getting paid as an intern? How can we bring more people from less privileged backgrounds into the industry if they can’t earn a living wage?

The evening:
7pm Welcome drinks
7:30pm Panel debate
8pm Questions from the audience
8:30pm Networking

The panel:
Matthew Dowling, CEO The Freelancer Club
Khandiz Joni, Make-Up Artist and Co-Founder of Novel Beings Creative Agency
Mark Watson, Partner at Fox Williams LLP Solicitors
