AARON ROSE - CONEY ISLAND IN THE 1960S

Aaron Rose remained fairly unknown as a photographer until the 90s, even though his most absorbing work was born decades earlier. His snaps of summer on a crowded beach in 1960s Coney Island are as voyeuristic as they are unobtrusive, mimicking a person trying not to gaze at other sunbathers for that split second too long.

I think a lot of these people had a few too many canolis in their day, so it can be hard to spot the little moments of intimacy amidst the wonderful mounds of flesh and flexing exhibitionists. Although when you do they shimmer like they're warm to the touch. A vivid, bittersweet reminder of the summer just gone.
