AUROVILLE: THE HIPPIE COMMUNE

A multicultural city in southern India, is a perfect example. Since its inception, the town has worked to realize what its website calls “human unity” and the “transformation of consciousness.” It is in a constant pursuit of balance and harmony… stoners welcome.

The colony was started in the late sixties by Sri Aurobindo and Mirra Richard, and its central philosophy is a belief that society will learn to progress forward only after people of many nations and cultures have learned to live together in harmony. A nice thought but with certain people in charge of certain countries that is looking highly unlikely. But the commune itself is like a miniaturized example of what world peace could look like.

The 2,000 plus residents hail from more than 40 different nations, and they all live and work together.
