FEMINIST PORN

Dirty Diaries has received 350,000 Swedish crones (£29,800) from the Swedish Film Institute in funding. The films have also obtained a great deal of support from active feminists. Mia is an outspoken feminist herself, and the Dirty Diaries are accompanied with a feminist manifesto where the film-makers express their rage towards censorship and cultural clichés such as those where women who like sex are considered as crazy.

Åsa Sandzén is the excecutive producer of Dirty Diaries. I had a chat with her.

So, how come you guys decided to make porn?

The producer, Mia Engberg, directed a lesbian porno called Selma & Sofie. However, she wanted to go a step further. One woman can’t make one film which represents every woman’s sexuality. Mia started off by doing a short film called Come Together, where she and some friends used a mobile phone cameras with which they used to film themselves when they were masturbating.

Come Together was shown on the Stockholm Film Festival’s homepage and got a lot of weird and mean comments. It was like if men who wrote the stuff on the website thought that all women should have the same facial expression as the women in mainstream porn when they experience orgasm. From Come Together, Mia invited some women (and people who identify themselves as women) to make their own porn with mobile phone cameras. And Dirty Diaries was born.

What distinguishes Dirty Diaries from mainstream porn?

In Dirty Diaries there are different women who show what they get turned on by; it’s the female view behind the lens, not the male. It’s the female and the queer in the imagination that rules, no matter if there are straight or lesbian women on screen... or a man who identifies himself as a woman. In mainstream porn the producers look at what the male audience wants to see, just to make as much profit as possible. Dirty Diaries is not a commercial project; the film-makers have artistic ambitions as well.

Why should you watch Dirty Diaries?

Because it’s a unique project which contains beautiful, artistic and, above all, exciting films. The 12 films are totally different from each other. There is something for everyone.
