FOOTBALLER PORTRAITS BY KEHINDE WILEY

Every World Cup coughs up few 'artsy' interpretations of football. By and large, they're often just an excuse for people who don't like the sport to compare it to a ballet/symphony/theatre/tragedy in three acts and various other things that would be of no interest to the average fan.

Kehinde Wiley is a New York-based artist who did a few portraits of Cameroon's football team, including Samuel Eto'o. They're lurid, engrossing, bizarre and grotesque - so, unlike most 'football-as-art,' exactly like the sport.

Wiley's other portraits are also great.

Check out more of Kehinde's work on his website.
