MARTIN PARR - BLACK COUNTRY STORIES

Martin Parr is one of the most celebrated photojournalists this country's ever produced. I know this sounds a bit reductive, but no one takes a better photo of regular people doing regular stuff than Martin Parr. His work depicts the mundane as utterly fascinating, so it makes sense that he's spent much of his career exploring the daily rituals of this strange island.

Despite this, he'd never visited the Black Country. When he was invited to document the area he jumped at the chance. Expecting to find communities suffering a post-industrial decline, he instead discovered an increasingly vibrant place, where old traditions flourished as new ones were introduced by recent immigrants.

His pics are going to be exhibited at the New Art Gallery in Walsall next month, and at the Wolverhampton Art Gallery later in 2015. A book, Black Country Stories, will be published next month.
