Manus Island is located in Papua New Guinea yet hosts a detention centre which is at the heart of Australia's controversial immigration policy. Since July 2013, asylum seekers who arrive to Australia via boat are transferred to Manus Island while their claims are processed; at times the refugee population has reached over 900.
There have been frequent allegations of substandard conditions and detainee mistreatment, resulting in protests and even more extreme forms of dissent. In 2014, island authorities quelled protests which led to a death and injured many others. This film meets two men detained at Manus Island, recounting their experiences prior to detention, their time in the facility and that fateful protest.
