Inspired by a sense of the carnival-esque, cult classic ‘The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari’ takes the viewer on a terrifying journey through the twisted mind of a sleepwalking murderer in Weimar Germany. Described by the BFI as one of the greatest silent horror films ever made, the 1920s spectacle is an endless orgy of fear, with every frame screaming madness and terror.
Take this film, add a cast of ten physical theatre actors, aerialists and circus performers, mix in some live music as well as stunning visual projections, and you have something close to Compass Presents latest event, ‘The Caligari Experience’, which is taking place at Motion on March 13th.
Seeking to bring this piece of classic cinema into a modern context, this multi-disciplinary event will showcase ‘The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari’ across a three screen set up. Dancers, clad in ominous costumes and death mask make up, will perform abstract pieces as well as more circus-like performances which will closely follow the narrative and main themes of the film.
Furthermore, a live score written and performed by Minima and projections by the ground breaking Limbic cinema (responsible for projections at events such as Glastonbury) are additions which should no doubt bring the already innovative film into the 21st century in a truly spell bounding way.
