Robert De Niro has little to prove. At this point in his long contribution to cinema, can you blame the guy for taking a role to cash a cheque? Or for briefly wanting to punch president-elect Donald Trump in the kisser? In any case, from the looks of Taylor Hackford’s latest feature The Comedian, ol' Bobby seems to actually give a shit. The movie follows De Niro’s Jackie, who struggles as an ageing, out-of touch comedian having once been a household name. While taking on a menial sales job, Jackie meets Leslie Mann’s Harmony and the two hit it off, going out to dinner, taking in a comedy night, and performing at Danny DeVito’s daughter’s wedding.
It’s a simple premise and one that Woody Allen build a career out of, but it’s hard not to see how meta this trailer actually is. Is De Niro actually making an effort now? In any case, after the debacle of Dirty Grampa and The Intern, it’s nice to see De Niro have some life left in him. Check out the trailer below and decide for yourself.
