Since 2014’s intriguing but ultimately forgettable Interstellar, audiences have been curious about what genre Christopher Nolan would tackle next. Leaving behind the stale superhero genre (unlike his writer-collaborator David S. Goyer who needs to pack it in already) to take on a war tale, we finally have a teaser for his latest grand cinematic outing Dunkirk.
Set during the Second World War's evacuation mission of Belgian, French, and British soldiers who were surrounded on all fronts, the teaser doesn’t reveal all too much. Nolan is one of few directors who can show a mere six shots and drum up enough attention to sell out cinemas a year in advance. Not even the stellar cast - Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance… Harry Styles(??!) - poke their heads up anywhere. None the less the trailer is oozing with atmosphere. Blending art house aesthetics with million dollar blockbuster sensibilities, Dunkirk looks to be a far cry from recent war epics. Lest we forget Pearl Harbor.
