SKIN DEEP: A PHOTOGRAPHY PROJECT 'REMOVING' EX-GANG MEMBERS' FACE TATTOOS

Alongside clothing colours and hand signs, bold, extensive tattoos are a common signal of U.S. gang membership, denoting details about the individual such as their particular group, area and rank. So for people looking to leave gangs, it's difficult enough to cut ties and move on with a permanent reminder of their former associations; that's why groups like Homeboy Industries exist, to offer options such as tattoo removal to former gang members. It was through HI that photographer Steven Burton discovered his subjects, he then spent 400 hours on Photoshop digitally removing their tattoos.
