SOVIET POSTER ART

Hands up: who has ever balanced haphazardly on a chair, armed with blue-tac and a curled up poster, determinedly trying to line up all four corners so the thing hangs straight, without bubbles, in a carefully selected rectangle of wall space that, on entering your room, holds all attention?! Some may have simply slapped up the face of their teenage idols, others may have delved into a more considered approach with the works of their favourite artists, either way, we have all been there.

Posters are the visual aid to a message (check out our old poster stock on our website). Whether the message be 'buy my new album' or something a little more ostentatious, posters have been around for decades and are still standing the test of time.

If you have ever studied art you will be familiar with Soviet poster design. Strong lines, blood reds and boisterous hierarchy designed to deliver a message, this lot don't beat around the bush and Prestel have just published an archive of examples of the very best in Soviet graphic arts, a sublime selection dating back to the start of the Russian Revolution in 1917, and as punchy as the statements within.

Presented in full colour and printed on heavy paper in a large-format, the posters gathered in this book represent the pinnacle of Russian avant-garde design from the 20th century. They range in theme from the dangers of alcohol abuse and the creeping Nazi menace to illustrations of utopian harmony and the Soviet industrial machine.

A special feature of this book allows for the removal of the posters for display or framing - yes you heard - free posters!  Including the work of groundbreaking Russian artists such as El Lissitzky and Alexander Rodchenko and extraordinary anonymous work by their contemporaries - let's treat them with rightful respect and maybe put the blue-tac away for these ones.
