Directed by AJ Schnack, Speaking Is Difficult is a thoughtful, pared back look at an incendiary US political issue: gun violence.
Schnack sent 20 cinematographers to places such as Newtown, Connecticut, the Washington Navy Yard and Charleston, South Carolina; names you might recognise because of their association with mass shootings over the past 5 years. The soundtrack is of emergency calls as these massacres were underway; the frantic nature of these communications jar with scenes of business as usual, but the association roars into focus when we witness memorials.
When it seems as if every feasible argument is employed on either side of the debate, Schnack makes a striking point, simply by showing unimaginable chaos and an uneasy status quo.
