With the 69th Cannes Film Festival programme dropping earlier this week, a teaser for one of the more anticipated films of the festival has popped up online. Nicolas Winding Refn's follow-up to his widely panned (but much underrated) Only God Forgives looks to be his darkest feature to date.
Neon Demons stars Ellie Fanning (alongside Keanu Reeves and Christina Hendricks) as a wide-eyed model starting out in the cutthroat Los Angeles fashion industry; cutthroat appears to be an apt description from what the teaser shows. Fanning's placid face juxtaposed with the frantic editing is a hectic treat for the senses. With surreal symmetrical imagery and a pulsing soundtrack this teaser certainly gets the blood going.
Neon Demon is nominated for the prestigious Palme d'Or. Refn has had a muddled relationship with the titular festival so his latest will undoubtedly divide audience members. Neon Demons looks to continue Refn's Marmite style of storytelling but with the script deriving from two relative unknown writers Mary Laws and Polly Stenham - this teaser has us excited.
