While she was never actually able to construct her self-described ‘Pussy Boat’, artist Megumi Igarashi aka Rokude Nashiko was arrested for obscenity charges by the Japanese police for making a mock model of her plans. The artist aimed to build a fully functioning canoe that could bring a whole new meaning to 'drowning in the pussy', but her plans were stunted when she displayed and distributed her macquettes to the general public to get some good old market research on her proposals. She is now facing two years in prison on the obscenity charges sparking debate regarding censorship and sexuality in Japan. After all, it's 2014, if we want to go for a row in our genitals we should all be able to do it, and if someone happens to jump aboard and join in, why bloody shouldn’t they?
Japan has a huge sex industry and a deeply fetishised culture relating to it. Despite this, prudish contradictions abound. Although you can buy used underwear from vending machines, the humble porno is a pixelated nightmare, that even the most strong willed wanker might struggle to fap to. Igarashi blames this censored sexuality as the inspiration behind her piece and the exploration of her own anatomy. While she was well versed in what was the ‘perfect pussy’, she felt she was nothing short of freaky when it came to her own nether regions. On discovery that each and every vagina is different she felt so empowered she developed pussy-centric artworks for the all the family. Her canoe was just the tip of the iceberg for the police who arrested her for ‘using three-dimensional obscene data’ and exposing it to the public.
