When a housemate purchased GTA V last year, the first thing I remember doing was punching a prostitute in the head. The blow killed the woman instantly, her neck jerking with a quick snap before her lifeless body fell to the curb. Although it sounds horrendous when you type it out, most of us spend our time in Los Santos acting out similarly violent storylines. Whether it's shooting helicopters out of the sky, emptying magazines into police departments or running people over on the proxy for Venice boardwalk, brutality prevails in GTA's world.
But it is indeed a world - and a vast one at that. Casey Brooks is a photographer IRL who thought he'd extend his skills to GTA's enormous digital realm via the game's photo feature. His series, You Only Live Forever, creates a narrative entirely separate from the bombastic storyline of the game, depicting the day to day life of a female resident of the city. There are no photos of violence, no rocket launchers and no excitement, just a person making her way through a life of little consequence - even if the images hint at a troubled past.
I've selected a few of my favourites. You can see the entire thing here.
There's a great interview with Casey over on the Creators Project. Check out his real-life work on his website.
