If you’ve ventured into any metropolitan area of Britain over the last few years, you’ll have noticed that our approach to food has changed. While traditional dining obviously still exists, new interlopers have emerged to run alongside it. Food trucks, supper clubs and pop-ups are giving consumers new reason to eat out, and it’s not necessarily because of the ingredients on the plate.
These days, it’s the experience that counts. You might as well eat a ready meal if you’re not going to Instagram your pulled pork sandwich, because no one except you will know that said dish was ticked off your culinary bucket list. Of course some will say I’m being too cynical - and perhaps those folks are right. While I love being a Debbie Downer who only eats out at 'Spoons, I’ll readily admit that this new wave of transient food is almost always delicious. Who am I to judge people who want to share the joy online?
Despite this, I’m not sure I’ll ever be down with a newly announced Game of Thrones inspired pop-up restaurant, cooked up by The Wandering Chefs and christened All Men Must Dine. I called up the PR behind it, but they were unable to relinquish the menu. If I was going to guess, the event will be a eat-with-your-hands pastiche of medieval banqueting, complete with turkey legs and mead. If it wants to be really immersive, you and your whole family will be massacred at the table before the thing even starts. Or maybe the staff will be naked, dunno.
This could b u!!!
Either way, I don’t see how the setting will improve on the work of some very talented chefs. If you want to give yourself to a delicious meal, having a bit-part actor ominously whisper ‘dessert is coming’ while you finish your main will only be an irritation.
But if this sort of thing really is your bag, then you have a chance to win a seat at the event, which takes place over three days between Friday 13 and Sunday 15 February at the Andaz Liverpool Street.
