Michael "Jim" Delligatti has recently passed away at the age of 98. Born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, Delligatti fought in World War II and opened a McDonald's franchise in his hometown in the 1950s. In 1967, Delligatti served up the two burgers, 'special sauce', pickles, cheese and onions on a sesame seed bun for the first time, but it'd take awhile for the dish to gain its signature name.
In fact, the fast food titan was said to be apprehensive about adopting Delligatti's creation, pointing to its simple and already popular menu. However, the risk has paid off as around half a billion Big Macs are sold yearly and the recipe remains unchained since its inception.
