Prodigy - one half of NY rap duo Mobb Deep - tragically passed away yesterday at the age of 42.

"It is with extreme sadness and disbelief that we confirm the death of our dear friend Albert Johnson," wrote his publicist, "better known to millions of fans as Prodigy of legendary NY rap duo Mobb Deep. Prodigy was hospitalized a few days ago in Vegas after a Mobb Deep performance for complications caused by a sickle cell anemia crisis. As most of his fans know, Prodigy battled the disease since birth. The exact causes of death have yet to be determined. We would like to thank everyone for respecting the family’s privacy at this time.”

Mobb Deep were responsible for pioneering a harder gangster rap sound in the early 1990s, with their debut album The Infamous being regularly cited as one of the best and most influential hip-hop albums of all time.

In loving memory, we've selected five rare and unreleased gems that show P at his best. Play 'em loud.

Temperature's Rising (Original Mix)

Alt mix of the soulful Infamous banger, 'Temperature's Rising'.

Survival Of The Fittest (Remix Extended Version)

The duo's original big hitter, re-imagined as a blissed-out summer head nodder.

Take It In Blood (Unreleased)

Unreleased gear from the Infamous era.

Still Shinin Part 2

Unreleased sequal to 'Still Shinin', the lead single off their third album, Hell On Earth, released in 1996.

Up North Trip (Demo Version)

An early, fuzzed-out demo cut of 'Up North Trip' - an underdog contender for best Mobb Deep track of all time.
