A few years ago a Soundcloud maestro drastically slowed down a Bieber song, I think it was 'Baby.' What resulted was a soaring, 20-odd minute ethereal soundscape, somewhat reminiscent of Sigur Ros. Soon people realised that anything slowed down by 4000% sounded like an avant-garde wall of sound, so the novelty soon wore off.
But now, another Soundcloud maestro - musician Brian Borcherdt, best known for his work with Holy Fuck - has realised there's still value in slowing down tracks, but slightly less. His latest project, chipmunkson16speed, slows the high-pitched squeals of Alvin & The Chipmunks to 16 RPM. The resulting sound is less ethereal soundscape, more sludgy, post-punk dirge. It's all surprisingly listenable.
