BIG NARSTIE ARGUES THAT KANYE WEST IS MORE RELEVANT THAN SHAKESPEARE IN OXFORD DEBATE

On 4th May, the Oxford Union debated the motion: This House Believes Kanye is More Relevant Than Shakespeare. The Union claimed that 'this debate forces us to question if we should be content to forget past cultural treasures in favour of the latest star', so clearly there's no bias on their part.

Speakers for the proposition included art critic and Lisson Gallery head of content, Ossian Ward, podcast host and writer, Jensen Karp, and grime MC Big Narstie; the opposition consisted of Justin Hunte (hip hop critic), Anthony Anaxagorou (publisher and wordsmith), and university fresher Matt Cook.

Towards the end, Narstie took to the floor. The BDL MC argued that Kanye West has greater contemporary relevance, but that he ultimately draws from the creative traditions Shakespeare established. It's cool that Narstie took the opportunity to argue his case in front of an audience he's a world apart from, but the atmosphere of class and academic condescension is inescapable. Spoiler: the motion was defeated.
