Horror inspired, costume wearing, generally disgusting band Gwar have announced the death of vocalist Dave Brockie also known by his more conventional stage pseudonym Oderus Urungus, in the evening of Sunday 23 March. Known for their unique stage shows and often crass, repulsive, sci-fi inspired outfits, Gwar shows often featured 'close-to-the-bone' comedy stylings, equally obscene lyrics and joyfully repugnant on-stage performances.
Members of Gwar and musicians Brockie affected have taken to social media to express their grief over a tragic loss of a 'truly unique' individual. Lamb of God guitarist, Randy Blythe, wrote on Instagram:
I got a very sad call tonight from my buddy Chris Bopst, who was one of the original members of Gwar - my friend Dave Brockie AKA Oderus Urungus, has left the building & taken off to his home planet. When someone dies, a lot of the time people will say 'Oh, he was a unique person, really one of a kind, a true original' - most of these people have no idea of what they are talking about. Dave truly was one of a kind - I can't think of anyone even remotely like him.
Gwar had been performing together since 1984 and in their 30 year career, released a staggering 14 albums, and were due to embark upon their fifth 'Gwar-B-Q', the yearly Gwar gathering where fans congregate to bathe themselves in the 'space-metal' culture and feast upon scorched flesh. Authorities have stated they 'do not suspect foul play at this time.'
