Jake Mcelfresh is alleged to have sent multiple lewd text messages to girls as young as thirteen. As he's on the Warped Tour, I assume that he met most of these girls at his shows. Gross! Now I'm not saying that Jake looks like a twenty-something who would text a 13-year-old, so here's a photo of him to allow you to come to your own conclusion:
Don't worry about the prejudicial thoughts swirling around your head right now, because you're not the only one having them. A change.org petition calling for him to be pulled from the tour has amassed 13K supporters. Obviously change.org petitions are probably the least effective form of protest there is, but as this one claims to have screenshots of the alleged texts, we better check it out!
Bored teenagers with lip-piercings (to the side) and tumblr accounts also have some powerful voices backing them up. Spearheading the famous side of the protest against Jake is Hayley Williams, Goddess-like lead singer of Paramore:
Of Front Porch Step's place on the billing, she had this to say:
@soorya for real the amount of pervy/predatory vibes that are surrounding the tour this summer is astounding. What happened to our scene?
I'd never really thought about this, but it kind of makes sense that pervy-vibes infect this particular scene. When a genre has a tendency to capture minds at their most impressionable (ie. the entire Warped Tour crowd), it's no wonder there are a few bad apples waiting to take advantage of them. Just look at Ian Watkins or the guy from New Found Glory.
Front Porch Step wrote this defense on his Facebook a while back. Recent comments link to an audio where he apparently admits the whole thing. Bummer.
I don't want to pre-emptively accuse someone, but I think I'm with Hayley on this one. The scene doesn't need people like Jake Mcelfresh. Or you or this town.
