In Quotes: The DUP

As you’ll all know by now, last week’s general election saw the Tories self-fucking themselves into oblivion, leaving them clinging to power like a wounded animal, propped up (just about) by an evil bunch called the DUP.

But “Who are the DUP??” said everybody.

Luckily for us and political journalists everywhere, the DUP’s sheer evil can be neatly conveyed in just a handful of quotes from actual real party members.

On LGBTQ rights:

Ian Paisley Jnr (MP for North Antrim): "I am pretty repulsed by gay (sic) and lesbianism. I think it is wrong. I think that those people harm themselves and – without care about it – harm society…. I mean, I hate what they do”.

He later went on to defend his comments on BBC Newsnight, clarifying that he was "repulsed by many things".

On gay marriage:

Arlene Foster (party leader): “I could not care less what people get up to in terms of their sexuality, that’s not a matter for me – when it becomes a matter for me is when people try to redefine marriage.”

On climate change:

Despite his appointment as Northern Ireland’s environment minister in 2008, Sammy Wilson has called the campaign to fight rising CO2 levels a “hysterical pseudo religion”, and went on to say "I don't care about CO2 emissions to be quite truthful because I don't think it's all that important".

On abortion:

Arlene Foster: “I would not want abortion to be as freely available here [Northern Ireland] as it is in England and don’t support the extension of the 1967 act.”

On Islam:

Peter Robinson (former First Minister for Northern Ireland): “I'll be quite honest, I wouldn't trust them in terms of those who have been involved in terrorist activities. I wouldn't trust them if they are devoted to Sharia Law. I wouldn't trust them for spiritual guidance. Would I trust them to go down to the shops for me, yes I would, would I trust them to do day-to-day activities... there is no reason why you wouldn't....Why are you so concerned about Muslims and not poor people like me?”
