At only 20 Amy Becker has stormed her way through the past two years, displaying a unique ability to mix genres, while expressing an impeccable selection of garage and grime, hip-hop and footwork as well as house and bassline. Spotted by 1Xtra at the beginning of 2012, she held a fortnightly Daily Dose Mix residency on MistaJam's show for 13 months - exceeding any other resident on the show. We chatted shit with her ahead of her set at Surround next weekend...
What's your 'go to' fancy dress piece?
I try to avoid all fancy dress parties these days because I'm just not into it haha but when I was younger I would jump at any opportunity to dress up as a goth or gangster rapper.
Tupac or Biggie?
Biggie - I used to refuse to get ready for school unless I could listen to Ready To Die in its entirety every day..
Can you give us the best film(s) you have watched recently?
I thought Dallas Buyers Club was sick, and I went to see 22 Jump Street the other day but I was so tired from my gig the night before I slept the whole way through it...apparently it's funny.
I'm too addicted to the internet to read.
Can you give us a highlight of playing on Radio one?
Recording a mix with the Newham Generals was a lot of fun, and finally hearing it on the radio after months of planning was quite surreal.
Any disasters / mishaps in the run up to one one of your mixes on Radio one?
I go to Leeds Uni and I was in first year when my residency started, so I usually had enough spare time to get the mixes recorded, but in second year it was often a struggle to meet mix deadlines on top of my work load and gigs. Nothing a few all nighters couldn't sort out though!
