It's not all about the music with / Goldie

Describe a typical day in the life of Goldie. Any daily rituals or habbits?

5.30 get up have a bath with some salts, listen to some classic music. Go to the station, go to Bikram yoga.

What do you enjoy about creating works of art, compared to writing music and DJing?

Writing music is creating art, creating an album is the same as painting. Painting for me is a more instant response in a way because its visual . Painting is my first love really.

What is your history in art and design, did you ever study it at school. or are you completely self taught?

Nah, I started a foundation course and then walked out.

What artists did you aspire to growing up?

Jean-Paul Basquiat. The artists that I aspire to today are the crew that I am part of, TSK crew, my old crew, you know T kid, Nisa, they are quite active.

Can you give us any tips on up and coming talent in the street art world?

TATS CRU are really active and really aspiring and are the best graffiti crew worldwide I think, loving that style a lot.

I really like Matisse.

Not that many new people, I prefer the older stuff the longevity of the older stuff. Most the people I really like have been around for a while. I like Graffiti kings and DAIMS is still a traditional painter. In terms of letter style I still think T-Kid has unbelievable letter style, but he has been around for fucking ever.

Can you give on of your highlights from the Pirate Radio era?

Every week was a fucking highlight, there’s always some shit going down, some kid who steals an aerial, someone can’t get access to the fucking flat you’re in. It is what it is, there is no one highlight its one big fucking blur.

It’s not one highlight it was about doing something that was trying to contribute to the community a lot better, instead of this fucking gentrification shit.

It’s all high baby.

DJing can mean a lot of travelling, late nights and an irregular sleeping pattern, how do you unwind and relax?

I do Yoga every day.

Can you give us the best film(s) you have watched recently?

Star Wars for me what a brilliant fucking film. Can’t wait for Chris Nolan’s Interstellar. Paul Thomas Anderson has always been one of my favourites of all time. Liquid Celluloid.

Magnolia is probably my favourite all time film.

Best book/comic?

Best book, I don’t know David Eagleman’s ‘Sum: Forty Tales from The Afterlife’ is a pretty good book. ‘Tibetan book of the dead’ that’s a classic book.

The book that really kills me that apparently the film is being made and is based on me as a person is ‘Kill your friends’ – a fucking hilarious film where I’m played by a guy called DJ rage apparently . It’s an Epic, its being made now and I think Pete Tong got the rights for it, or somebody did. But it’s a classic classic laugh out loud. It was actually based, not many people know this, on the melt down of Pologram records, and it was me and All Saints and I can’t remember who else. It was based on the A&R men who worked there at the time, Pete Tong Included. It is about the melt down of that Rock n Roll lifestyle, what happens is quite funny.

Metalheadz is one of the most established, loved, and respected labels in Drum and Bass. What advice would you give to any budding producers looking to set up a label?

Different, be different. Go against the mould really, that’s what we do, that’s what we did for years.

if you were to pick one track that sums up the spirit of Drum and Bass, what would it be?

Hard. I’d say D-Bridge True Romance VIP

Where is your favourite place to eat in London? Any tips for our readers?

After all these years it’s still the Ivy, I don’t know why. I am a bit traditional.

What is your favourite cartoon/tv show growing up?

Oh god would have to be Family Guy and Robot Chicken. TV at the moment House of Cards and Orange is the New Black.

Where is your favourite place to party in the world?

Thailand, Bangkok, I love Bangkok.

What was your initial reaction when asked to create a 'Masterpiece' for Ministry of Sound?

How am I going to make it smaller?

What is your vision of the future for street art and graffiti?

What you do today creates tomorrow.

What else can we expect from Goldie in  2014 both in music and in art?

Doing a live show next year, which is going out in 12 Sympathy halls, festival hall included. Just very very busy.
