MATMOS LECTURE

16 Tuesday 16th February 2010

Before their appearance at the Southbank Centre alongside some of techno's biggest names last Friday, Matmos spent some time at the Red Bull Music Academy discussing themselves and their music. The pair were jovial, if a little sleep deprived after their long-haul flight from Baltimore, as they discussed how their collaborative partnership functions... or doesn't.

Matmos' music leans heavily on the aesthetic of musique concrete, using a great deal of found sound. Their experiments in music have led them to collaborate with a wide range of musicians, sound artists, even liposuction surgeons. They discussed how their approach to music led them to record a collaborative effort with Kronos Quartet.

Both Drew and Martin are academics and have been known to write widely about the musical milieu. Martin described his view on the necessity for new music in a world populated with unheard music.

Matmos' full lecture will be available soon. Hear their live set from RBMA with Resident Advisor at the Southbank Centre here. Download the RBMA Daily Note newspaper.
