MIA

Hounslow born Maythangi ‘Maya’ Arulpragasm, better known as M.I.A., has recently launched yet another electrifying (and as always slightly mysterious) demo which you can find at bedroomtothehallwaytotheroadtotheworld.com. It’s pretty mental and comes with no explanation, which is probably why we like it so much. It’s just a couple of short vids from a live show god knows where, looping to her new song. Is the song even by the same name as the website? Who knows?

This is why we’re in love with M.I.A. Where’s the self-promotion? Where’s the insane in-your-face advertising? Where are all the paparazzi moments? Nowhere. It’s just her music. She makes it, you can listen if you want (and you will want) and that’s all there is to it.

After two albums and releasing probably the most played song of the decade (but you could never over-play Paper Planes) she hit hard when she released the first single from her third album, /\/\/\Y/\ (Maya). Romain Gavras, controversial music director of Justice’s ‘Stress’, worked his magic for one of the most talked about videos of the year. Banned from YouTube, ‘Born Free’ was a violent and rather shocking video that stirred up every emotion within people from outrage to horror to awe.

Throughout her life she’s done whatever she can to develop her art and music, getting into Central Saint Martins fashion University by calling up the head of the art department over and over and claiming she would become a prostitute if she wasn’t let in.

M.I.A is playing The Warehouse Project in Manchester on 13 November, and from there is going on a full European tour until early December. We can’t help it. We love M.I.A.

For more information see M.I.A.'s myspace and Neet Recordings.
