SOUNDCLOUD'S BRISTOL MUSIC DOC MISSES THE POINT TRIUMPHANTLY

It is a well-established fact that big brands attempting to sell themselves off the back of indie artistic ventures is an ill-advised practice, fundamentally doomed to failure.

Yet still they try. Yesterday, Soundcloud joined the ranks of brands attempting to look credible whilst missing the mark completely with the launch of their new ‘Bristol Music Scene’ mini-documentary.

The video, which largely focuses on a group of young student house promoters - all white, nearly all male – manages to portray Bristol as a bland, white-washed suburb of London, with a music scene consisting solely of big-room house and disco nights at Bristol’s one super-club, Motion. Not a single Bristolian accent is heard throughout the video, and barely a single recognisable member of the city’s vibrant, multicultural music scene is present.

It's not the kids in the video who are at fault. Every city needs its student scene, and ultimately these are just boys out to have a good time. Rather, it is Soundcloud's absolute failure to represent any semblance of the scene at large - particularly the parts that aren't white, male, middle class and beautiful - that makes the video such a complete dud. Given that Bristol is a city so completely jam-packed with talent, it really is an astonishing feat for Soundcloud to have missed the mark so completely.

Edit: the video has since been deleted by Soundcloud - but we've found an alternate stream, embedded below.
