Toro Y Moi

Lovebox is a pretty cool festival; you’ve got three days of decent music (Roxy Music, Grace Jones, Hot Chip and Hercules & Love Affair) alongside a really nice atmosphere and hip-hop karaoke!
This year’s line-up at the Gaymer’s stage consisted of acts such as Yeasayer, Toro Y Moi and These New Puritans to name but a few. What’s that? You really like Toro Y Moi and would LOVE to read an interview with Chaz Bundick of the band??? Well, today is your lucky day loyal reader!
Toro Y Moi is 23 year old Chaz Bundick from South Carolina who started making music in his bedroom and has now flourished into recently releasing critically acclaimed album Causers of This.
We caught up with Chaz after his set on the Gaymer’s Stage to talk chillwave, the year so far and what he’s got up his sleeve for the future.
Is this your first UK gig?
This is our first trip over here, but we played Canterbury last week.
So this is your first London gig?
How has it been?
It’s been really cool, we landed here and stayed for about and hung around for two days but this is the first time we’ve played a show and it was fun.
So why did you have you to cancel your London gig a few months back?
Oh, I guess it must have been because we couldn’t afford to fly over, that was when it was just me on my own.
So what’s it like playing with a band now?
It’s a lot better and easier.
Congratulations on your new album, how has it been having a critically acclaimed album out?
Good so far, it’s been well received. It’s a good feeling to have those reviews out there.
You’ve been termed as ‘chillwave’, how do you feel about it? Do you feel that you are a ‘chillwave’ artist?
No, I don’t mind that term, but I just like to call my music pop.
What would you say sets you apart from other artists termed as ‘chillwave' (Washed Out, Neon Indian, etc.)?
Ha, I don’t know. Any answer would be sort of pompous. I try my best to do different things and I hope to see other artists out there doing that too.
Have you enjoyed Lovebox so far?
We just got here 30 minutes before we had to go on. We haven’t walked around yet, but we want to.
So what’s your best moment of 2010 been?
I guess having the record out, the release date and everyone getting familiar with the songs, which was a good feeling.
Future plans?
Yeah, I’m trying to finish the second record for the winter, that’s my main goal.
Any advice for the kids out there?
Don’t believe the hype.
