Jay - Z once said that “The Urban Music Awards was the first awards ceremony that said hey you the music fans you tell us what is popular not some academy of judges”.

Now the people have spoken again and the nominations for this years Urban Music Awards are out and the shortlist reflects what has been a truly successful year for British urban music!

This year over 2.6 million music fans have voted online and the artists / producers /  organisations with the highest nominations have been automatically shortlisted.  The public are then given the power again to vote for the winners in all respective categories for the 15th annual Urban Music Awards sponsored by VooVix.

Nominees include an array of acts from One Direction star Zayn, DJs Charlie Sloth to Capital 1Xtra star Yinka Bokinni and Stormzy of course. Cardi B also gets a nod as the newcomer continues her rise from reality starlet to the new rap regina. She's up against badass brits Lady Leshurr and Mabel in the Best Female Act category.

The new King of Grime Stormzy and the seasoned bonkers hit maker will go head to head in the Best Music Video and Best Album categories as their singles for Big For Your Boots and Space and LPs Gang Signs & Prayer and Raskit have made the shortlists.

Dizzee and Wretch, 32, are both up for the gongs for Best Single for ‘Space’ and ‘Whistle’ respectively and Best Male Act, while Wretch has also been named in the list for Best Hip Hop Act. Wretch 32 commented on the importance of the ceremony saying: ‘Most people don’t quite understand how much of an impact the UMA’s had on the scene today. The truth is without the Urban Music Awards, urban music will not be where it is today’.
