2014 has seen a second lease of life for some amazing circa 1970s African music with names like William Onyeabor getting the global appreciation he is due through the collection ‘Who is William Onyeabor’ on World Psychedelic Classics. Another name to add to this list is Verckys, a Congolese artist who in 1974 was dubbed ‘Mister Dynamite’ by the Godfather of Soul, James Brown.
In his day Verckys was a big name in West African music but inevitably his sound did not make it to far out of his native Congo due to a lack of pressings but thanks to the people at Analog Africa he will also get the respect he is due for his funky afrobeat sound across the globe. The collection was put together from his work with L’Orchestre Vévé between 1969 and 1978. The release has received strong support from the likes of Lauren Laverne, Giles Peterson and Tom Ravenscroft.
