Although they hadn't released an album in several years, The Beach Boys were still incredibly popular in the mid-70s. The shadow of Vietnam was looming, Nixon was embroiled in a scandal, and so all anyone wanted to do was re-live the sun-soaked memories of the band's earlier hits. Nothing like Surfin' USA to make people forget about socio-economic unrest.
At the same time, Saturday Night Live was becoming a cultural universe, and John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd its eminent stars. To capitalise on the success of both, SNL creator Lorne Michaels created a TV special called The Beach Boys: It's OK, which would blend lulzy SNL style-skits with footage of the band's latest tour.
One skit was called 'Surf Police.' In it, Belushi and Aykroyd, dressed as cops, bust into Wilson's room, drag him out of bed, and force him to go surfing. While that's funny in itself, it's even funnier because Wilson couldn't surf for shit - nor had he ever tried. "He was not happy about it," Michaels told Rolling Stone in 2006. Check it out:
