8 TIMES STAR WARS SUMMED UP UK POLITICS PERFECTLY

Today is an occasion of particular internet wackiness; May 4th, aka Star Wars Day (as in May The 4th Be With You, similar to the iconic quote). You'll see people celebrate the cinematic saga by posting their favorite scenes, typing out the most memorable lines, sharing memes and, hey, maybe even watching the damn flicks.

The series has been politically appropriated in a host of ways. Ronald Reagan called his planned space defence system Star Wars, while factions like the Sith can be seen as an analogy for Nazism or communism; the lead characters may be conservative rebels smashing the nanny state or left wing guerillas battling against imperialism (Jar Jar is irredeemably shit whatever his affiliation is though).

We took a look at this fandom and realised parts of the series mirror our current political reality perfectly; isn't Corbynmania a New Hope? Isn't the lead characters threatened by a closing trash compactor equally as doom-laden as the upcoming Brexit negotiations? And Theresa May's alliance with Donald Trump born out of Anakin Skywalker-style dark intentions? Frightening overlaps, even for a film series aimed at children. Check out a few more...
