My uncle once told me that when he used to drive through Mexico back in the day, he'd carry a big sock full of change with him. Not only could you bribe police with the change, but it doubled up as a weapon. It doesn't really seem smart or factual, but I was reminded of the claim after watching this video of a selfie stick defense class.
A Russian martial arts school is offering the training to tourists and sigthseers, because a selfie stick is usually the only passable those people have on them. Thanks a lot airport security. So when a local mugger tries to snatch a smartphone, the prepared traveller can hit them with any number of stick-related combos.
It's a nice idea. But I doubt it's as effective as swinging a gym sock full of change like a mace.
