Staff riding is slang for train surfing in Katlehong, South Africa. Marco Casino’s documentary follows the kids behind the "sport", which is a big deal in the poverty-stricken township.
The train surfers -most of who are under 25 - face really fun stuff like amputations and often death for the rush of standing on top of a moving train. Describing the sport as a “suicide mission”, the surfers see it as a form of self expression.
Staff Riding won first prize in the Online Short Category from the 2014 World Press Photo Multimedia Contest.
