Since launching in 2005, Reddit – the self-proclaimed ‘frontpage of the internet’ – has grown rapidly in size and stature to the point where it now caters for over 542 million users worldwide per month. It attracts a total of 82 billion page views per year, making it the 25th most-viewed site on the internet and the largest online media aggregator of its kind.
But what is Reddit to you?
Perhaps it’s a revolutionary platform for sharing ideas, news and media from around the world; an online hub for crowd-sourcing information and inspiration from a vast array of different cultures and people.
Or maybe it’s an honest, open-minded community and support network: a crowd of anonymous eyes and ears; always willing to listen, always happy to engage.
If you’re like me, however, it’s neither of these things.
Instead, Reddit’s sole function in my happless life is facilitating what I call the ‘daily gawp’: the voyeuristic, self-affirming act of leering – pointing and laughing - at the most beautiful calamities and fuck-ups that the world currently has to offer. Just thirty seconds of homepage perusal will suffice to assure you that somewhere, somehow and at some point (I think it was the 80s) things went gravely and irrecoverably wrong for us. Extend your visit to a full half hour and you will be granted a vivid and comprehensive insight into the fucked up collective consciousness of modern mankind.
If Reddit really is mankind’s true measure, then the amazing r/Drugs subreddit is modern man at his most leathered: modern man asking for fags and gum in a dingy corner of the world's smoking area. Checking in regularly provides a constant reminder that - no matter how fucked up you are, or how fucked up you’ve been getting - there's always someone out there getting a whole lot more fucked up than you.
