Obviously there may be a greater obligation for non-English speakers to learn the language, especially for business or education purposes, but that doesn't mean we Brits should only extend our foreign language skills to TALKING. LOUDLY. AND. SLOWLY or pointing. I know it's not all of us, so credit to you guys who remembered all of GCSE french.
Now Google is making it even less likely that we'll pick up a few foreign phrases before a trip. Their new lens feature will instantly translate signs, without even needing to use pricey foreign wifi. Zut alors!
The other feature is triggered by a mic. Speak into your phone, and it will translate your statement into writing and a creepy Siri voice will recite it. Shoving your phone's screen into the face of your foreign waiter is sure to engender good relations with your host country.
