The LA Weekly recently wrote a terrific piece documenting a rarely seen Gay Wing in LA Men's Central Jail. They made an all too short video to accompany the article, which tells a fascinating story of community and support in a place notorious for providing neither.
The gay, queer and transgender men who solely occupy the wing seem to treat each other as family, meaning violence doesn't affect their section of the jail. Because of this, many hetero dudes are eager to be housed in this more peaceful, more fabulous, wing, so will often attempt to pass as gay. As a result, officers have to conduct Gaydar tests to ensure they're actually into guys.
