VICE America recently caught up with a dude called John Rocker, a former professional baseball player who served as inspiration for Kenny Powers, Danny McBride's lovable burnout from Eastbound & Down. The HBO series perfectly blended comedy, tragedy and the totally absurd, and yet it somehow remained heartfelt and sincere. Knowing a guy like Rocker exists makes that rare televisual feat seem oddly attainable.
The similarities between the two are uncanny. The accent, the crude sexual gags, the quasi God-complex, the racial discrimination (Rocker supports a 'Speak English this is 'Murica' campaign) and the fact that both Rocker and McBride were born in the same Georgia hospital make this a surprisingly unnerving watch. Hilarious, but unnerving.
