Two years ago, a Brazilian referee was repeatedly stabbed during a game after a player took umbrage at one of his decisions. After killing the official, the player's family stormed the pitch and proceeded to sever the ref's head, ultimately sticking it on a spike. I doubt you'd ever see Jonjo Shelvey decapitate a ref on a cold night in the Liberty Stadium!
After hearing about that story, you can see why some referee's in Brazil might want to bring more to a game than just a red and yellow card. At a recent amateur match between Brumadinho and Amantes da Bolamatch, referee Gabriel Murta pulled out a gun after being kicked and punched by one of the Amantes players.
Luckily, his linesman persuaded him not to fire. Murta is now due a psychological assessment to determine whether he can officiate again. Which seems reasonable.
