SPITBANK FORT

Mike Clare - the ex CEO of bed store Dreams, no less - has turned a 19th century sea fort into a hotel. Off the coast of Portsmouth, Spitbank Fort was built by Lord Palmerston to protect Britain's most important naval base from Napoleon. Now, with all its guns removed and a £3 million makeover, the 7,000 sq ft base can be reached via boat or helicopter and features eight bedrooms, a restaurant, a bar, fire pit, pool and sauna, and - naturally - a lighthouse.
