Last weekend, the EDL demonstrated in Birmingham's Centenary Square. During the event, EDL leader Ian Crossland plus supporters allegedly surrounded a Muslim counter-protestor, Saria Zafar, and harangued her with comments about her faith and nationality. At that point, another counter-protestor, Saffiyah Khan, stood up for Zafar against the group of men; Press Association Joe Giddens took a picture of the interaction which has gone viral. Khan has been praised for supporting Zafar, as well as showing poise and dignity when confronted by the nationalist group.
The Guardian has reunited the protestors for this short discussion. The pair talk about the importance of solidarity, Birmingham as a multicultural city and dismiss the stereotype of Muslim women as passive or oppressed.
