In a surprisingly self-aware move, The Simpsons enlisted animator Don Hertzfeldt to create a couch gag in which the family live on, uncancelled, into the year 10,000+. It's a bleak and confusing prophecy, but one that's all too likely to come true.
This continues the recent trend of couch gag mini-movies, a clever little trick that compensates for the perplexing, desperate writing that now dominates the show. For example, the episode that followed this gag centred around the death of Krusty's father, because why not.
