A HISTORY OF SOCIAL MEDIA

I thought I knew loads about social media until today - we’ve grown up utterly submerged in it, babies of the 90’s practically shit emails. Even my Nan has a facebook – which is pretty weird. My life is basically one big virtual interaction. Social media is indefinite, and I think it’s safe to make the assumption we could no longer survive without it. Yet it seems this whole internet thing is a little older than some may think.

I had absolutely no idea that the first ever email was sent way back in 1971. Not only that, but the first internet provider in the US was established even earlier, in 1969. So I was pretty stoked to discover writer Cendrine Marrouat created this awesome infographic detailing social media’s timeline. There’s a load of big names on there, such as Twitter and Tumblr, but also stuff I’ve never heard of such as GeoCities. It’s definitely worth a look if you’re looking to hone your social media knowledge, or you know, just for fun.

Don't Panic attempt to credit photographers and content owners wherever possible, however due to the sheer size and nature of the internet this is sometimes impractical or impossible.
