BAE REVEALS TOP SECRET 1960S DESIGNS

18 Tuesday 18th June 2013

There is a jumping Jeep, as requested by the British Army, which would leap over obstructions on the battlefield. The ‘Mustard’ (Multi-Unit Space Transport and Recovery Device) was designed to split into 3 sections that could return separately to Earth. Described as a ‘reusable space plane’, some of its concepts can be seen in the current Virgin Galactic spacecraft.

The intercity vertical-lift aircraft would have saved runway space in busy cities by taking off vertically with the aid of powerful fans. Also designed to hover, the fighter jet platform would act as an airbourne aircraft carrier.

The designs were dismissed due to cost issues and complexity.
