DON’T BUILD YOUR HOME – GROW IT

The business of having a home is harder now than ever. It’s expensive. It’s risky. And, of course, it’s not great for the environment. Finding, buying and moving into a new home could be more stress than you can handle. But if you don’t want to end up homeless instead, there isn’t any escape from it. Don’t worry, though: the future is bright home-buyers now, as urban designer Mitchell Joachim has pioneered his own unique solution. Don’t build your home – grow it!

Joachim’s campaign against “America’s unremitting state of trauma” – that of the over-processed masses – really does begin at home. In the following TED video his radical new approach to architecture sees him attempt to bring ‘pleaching’ into the modern mainstream. It’s a 2500-year-old technology that grafts trees together. By taking it a step further, the branches can be trained into special patterns to create a “Fab Tree Hab”. In normal speak, that’s an advanced treehouse.

The innovation doesn’t stop there, though. Joachim also proposes meat houses – “the in-vitro-meat habitat”. The material is grown in a test-tube – so no moral dilemmas there then. Ideally the meat house would use fatty cells as insulation... and sphincter muscles for the doors and windows. It’s only a step up from using meat for shoes and handbags, right?
