HIGH TECH BILLBOARD COUGHS WHEN SMOKERS ARE NEARBY

Take a look at a packet of cigs and you'll see the warnings are already pretty grim; how could you do this to your body and other people? seems to be the ongoing refrain. This new billboard advert in Sweden seeks to inject even more shame into proceedings. Erected in an urban area popular with smokers, the billboard is equipped with smoke detectors which trigger a video of an actor coughing when a smoker passes.

I hate this quite a lot. Of course new attempts should be made to dissuade people from smoking because it's a fucking gross habit- maybe it'll even be successful. But where do you draw the line? A CGI-animated George Best tutting as you down a street beer, Elvis Presley's last breath on his toilet as you walk by with McNuggets? Should these boards be as popular as CCTV cameras (as they're perceived as preventing crime)? Streets filled with avatars judging whatever minor pleasures people have to get through the day. Basically this all reads as a rejected script from Black Mirror and that's no way to set health policy. Here's how the ad works anyway...
